Highlights of Wong’s Academy 38th Annual Dinner
We had our 38th Annual Dinner on 11 December 2016. It was a great success, thanks to the great support and spectacular performances put up by our members.
The Annual Dinner is a tradition of Chinese martial art schools passed down for many, many years. And our Sifu, Professor Kit Po Wong is dedicated to maintaining this precious tradition. In fact, with the support from our members, he’s done it for the past 38 years.
But this year’s Annual Dinner was a little special. Because, first, we had the “Dotting the Eyes” (點睛) ceremony for our new baby lion. This is another tradition of Chinese martial art schools.
When we have a new lion, we have to “dot” its eyes, before we officially start using it to perform. By doing so, we give life to the lion.
After Sifu dotted the lion’s eyes, it came to life. And we had lion dance…
…Followed by Chow Gar (周家拳) and Tai Chi (太極拳) demonstrations.
Another highlight of the night was, after the demonstrations, we showed a rare video of Grandmaster Chow Biu (周彪宗師). Grandmaster Chow Biu was one of the founders of Chow Gar Kung Fu. He was our Sigung (i.e. our Sifu’s Sifu of Chow Gar Kungfu) and his photo is depicted below. Our Sifu’s Tai Chi Chuan is from Grandmaster Huang Shing Shyen, a disciple of Grandmaster Professor Cheng Man Ching.
Towards the end of the night, Sifu presented black sashes to Trung and Ian, two senior members of our Academy. It is a great honour to receive a black sash from Sifu, because it takes years of hard work and dedication.
So that concluded our 38th Annual Dinner.
Thanks to all the members, families, and friends for making the dinner a success. And congratulations to all the performers for putting up such spectacular performances.
